Chapter 18

Letting Skylar out of my bed this morning was the hardest thing ever, but she has work and training, though she’s promised to find time for lunch together.

I have things to do too: I have to talk to Denys then I need to tell Kasey to back off.

I could wait until rehearsals are over, since we have the afternoon free, but I need to get it off my chest, so I decide the pull the Band-Aid off and call Denys’s room, though he’s probably fast asleep in bed.

“J! Are you crazy? It’s six-thirty. Six-fucking-thirty!” he swears down the phone. “What’s up? Skylar blow you off again last night so you’re taking it out on me?” he asks exasperated.

“Get your ass up here. We’ll have ourselves a little chat over breakfast,” I reply coolly.

Five minutes later, he knocks on my door. He knows that when I say we need to talk, then things are serious.

When he walks through the door, he glances around the suite then stares at me. “If you made that mess on your own,” he winks, pointing at my bed, “then you’re a real champ, otherwise...”

“Yeah. Skylar was here but she has to work, that’s why I’m here alone. Anyhow, it’s not my sex-life I need to talk to you about.” I nod, indicating the armchair.

“Wow! You got me worried,” he says, his face suddenly serious."

“And so you should be,” I say, sitting down opposite him.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” His elbows on his knees, he leans toward me.

“About Eric’s accident...”

There’s another knock on the door: room service with the breakfast I ordered.

As soon as the waitress leaves, I continue.

“Listen, D – I’m going to tell you the truth but you have to promise me you won’t do anything stupid, that you’ll hear me out and behave like the guy I love and trust and that, above all, you’ll watch your back, no nonsense, huh?” I pour out two cups of coffee.

“Jaxon, I swear, I won’t do anything but, please, tell me what the hell is going on, you’re scaring me.” He takes a generous sip of the hot, black liquid.

“What happened yesterday... was no accident, D. Somehow, Derrik Jones was involved. Put it this way, if you had taken that snowboard, you’d be dead now. Someone tampered with the bindings,” I say, before going into details, explaining the dangers he faced, and the conclusions that Eric and I made.

Denys’s face darkens. Fortunately, he understands perfectly what could have happened. We have no evidence, otherwise I’d file a report, but I did receive a message from Eric, confirming he spoke with the guy who checked the board after the accident and that he agrees that the binding had been tampered with.

I’m telling him again, for the umpteenth time, that he has to absolutely stay calm and not do anything stupid, not even badmouth Derrik online, when there’s another knock at the door and Kasey strides in.

“What’s Denys doing here at this time” she demands to know.
